Ok, if there's nothing there now I'll see if I can make it work somehow.
Note, I'm not talking necessarily about parent changes, but updates to the
patch itself. Version 3 of a patch is not a parent of version 4.

Right. In this setting letting the build continue is a complete waste of
time because Gerrit will ignore reviews on superceded patches.
