[Buildbot-devel] Future of MAINTAINERS.txt

A few years ago, I embarked on a project to try to increase our
contributor retention rate by recognizing contributors in
https://github.com/buildbot/buildbot/blob/master/MAINTAINERS.txt

The idea was that people could specialize in a small part of Buildbot,
hopefully fixing more bugs in the areas I and other major contributors
are less familiar with, and preventing bitrot.

It hasn't really worked out that well -- it turns out that putting
someone's name in a text file isn't quite the same as a spell of
binding.  So, I'd like to remove the file
(http://trac.buildbot.net/ticket/2856).

I'm open to feedback though -- has this been useful in a way I don't
see?  Do you have suggestions for other simple ways to improve
retention?
