Hey folks,

First, Buildbot-0.8.9 is in the works. John Carr is running this
release (we really should invent a clever name for this job!), so you
can expect to see some calls for testing from him. This is a big
release, although populated with many fairly small feature
improvements and bugfixes, rather than any world-altering changes.

Which brings me to Nine, a world-altering change. Once Buildbot-0.8.9
ships, we'll be making nine the primary focus, and eight will become a
dead end at some level. That means:
 * Nine development will take place on the 'master' branch
 * Eight development will move to an 'eight' branch
 * All the cool kids will be hacking on nine
 * Changes made to Eight will not be merged forward any longer [1]
 * The future of Eight is up to "someone else" -- I won't be working
on it myself [2]
 * We will get Nine up and running on the metabuildbot and get some
release candidates out

If you'd like some background on these branches, check out

[1] Although I'm happy to cherry-pick compatible commits on request,
and will happily merge any well-formed forward-ports in the form of
pull requests.

[2] I can envision any of
  (a) Eight goes away quietly, perhaps after 0.8.9p1 or so with some
small bugfixes
  (b) Eight continues as a longer-term bugfix-only branch
  (c) Eight continues as an active branch for those unable to upgrade to nine
What happens is up to those who are interested and willing to drive it.
