Off the top of my head, I think all of the combinations of 0.8.x masters and slaves should work with each other - the protocol hasn't fundamentally changed. In particular, a newer slave should understand a superset of the older versions of the protocol. Less relevant to your case: there are fallbacks if a newer master tries to send an unsupported command to an older slave.

(I haven't deployed the nine branch myself, so this may not hold true for certain definitions of "latest".)
