Hmm.  You can certainly just use it on your workstation,
but yes, it's supposed to automatically install everything
needed, and should work on very bare installs.  I certainly
used virtual machines heavily while testing it, and I deploy
it inside virtual machines in practice.

Except that virtualbox explodes when I try running lxc inside it,
( http://www.mail-archive.com/lxc-users@lists.sourceforge.net/msg04027.html )
so I'd probably recommend vmware player.
