OK, I've got a first working version here :

It's a little too cut-n-pasty for my taste, but it does work, and there are 
two unit tests. I've tested it with my modified version of GerritStatusPush.
I'm not very pleased to add a method whose docstring reads "Note: this 
method will go away in 0.9.x", but I guess it will be easier to refactor all 
at once for 0.9.

I'll work on modifying the official GerritStatusPush to take advantage of 
this tomorrow, if it looks OK to you.
