I have mentored a couple of projects for a number of different orgs over 
the years (Python, Boost, DocBook, etc.). It's very much worth it, in 
particular if you are well-prepared (define useful tasks early for 
potential candidates to pick up, then work with the candidates to make 
sure they have all they need to succeed, etc.)

Besides the actual contribution(s) to the project, you may even gain new 
core developers. I think it's very much worth it.
