It's also worth noting that computing has moved away from the
monolithic-system model (in which everyone has to use the same
software) to a many-systems model.  In many cases, folks implementing
a new application can build a custom system to suit it.  For example,
at Zmanda I installed a new box to run the buildmaster and its
necessities.  We happened to have a spare 1-CPU box, or I would have
used a VM.

Of course, the downside to allowing this kind of ad-hoc
system-building is version skew and subsequent pain in distributed
systems administration.  Then we get into issues of configuration
management that are probably too off-topic for this list :)
