AFAIK, hg already compresses the bundle it ships over the network.
Really reducing the load would probably mean creating something that,
IIRC, hg folks would call a shallow clone, i.e., a clone without
history. http://www.selenic.com/mercurial/wiki/index.cgi/ShallowClone
has more on that project, but that's not there yet, afaict.
