Great, thanks for doing that background research!  Yes, keeping at
least some Python-2 compatibility is critical to the project, more so
on the slave.  And yes, maintaining two different branches (is not an
option).

There's at least a bug filed to port PB -
https://twistedmatrix.com/trac/ticket/7598 - but it looks like if you
were to take on this project you'd need to solve that bug, too.
That's not at all out of scope for GSoC (in fact Twisted has
historically been a GSoC mentoring organization), but I don't have a
good feeling for how complicated it would be.
