Charles, you're absolutely correct.

Within the bounds of the current master/slave protocol (c.f. the announcement of the GSoC projects for this summer, which will change things), all versions are mutually compatible.  However, if you try to use features from the master that don't exist on the slave, they won't work.  So upgrading either one never hurts, and for the most part, things will work with new masters and older slaves.  You'll get good error messages when you try to use a feature that doesn't exist on a slave.
