I just tried the version from 0.8.5 and get the same error.

This is on a box running Debian stable:

Bazaar (bzr) 2.1.2
  Python interpreter: /usr/bin/python 2.6.6
  Python standard library: /usr/lib/python2.6
  Platform: Linux-2.6.32-028stab092.1-x86_64-with-debian-6.0.5
  bzrlib: /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/bzrlib
