[Buildbot-devel] git step doesn't check exit status?

Bringing up a new project, on the first build, the git step log ends with

Cloning into '.'...
Host key verification failed.
fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly
program finished with exit code 128
elapsedTime=0.488837

but the Build #0 page for that project shows green for the git step.

I suppose I should try making a minimal test case, but in the meantime,
has anyone seen this before?
