I completely agree, and already tried to raise the trouble back in 
september last year [1] for instance ...

As almost anyone needs custom steps, it should be **damn easy** to write 
them. And documenting the difficulty, while good, does not lower it. 
Unfortunately, noone came with an (acceptable) idea.

Keeping an eye on backward compatibility, could you elaborate on the 
above ? We might have a winner there !
