As for a quick workaround, something that checks time.time() in
doTimeout, and re-calls reactor.callLater if it didn't wait long
enough, might make a good workaround.  It might also give more hints
as to what's going on.

Is there any chance there's clock weirdness on this system?  Is it a VM?
