I don't have any good ideas here, unfortunately.

I hate to be a testing nay-sayer, but for this particular regression
it may be easier to just conclude that "it works" based on
hand-testing, and move on, rather than putting a lot of elbow grease
into an automated test.  The VC tests have been causing the majority
of our spurious(?) test failures anyway.
