[Buildbot-devel] Why do the vc-tests require http-checkout?

Hi,

I had an idea about trying to fix some shortcomings in 'hg serve' to 
make the vc-tests a bit more robust. (select random port and flush 
stdout to know when it's up and running, instead of checking the socket.)

After some discussion on Mercurials bugtracker, I was asked why BuildBot 
needs to test Hg via http checkout. I noticed all vcs do this, but I 
can't really answer why, which sort of ground things to a halt over there.

I suppose Brian knows?
