I don't know. I've never run buildbot slaves on unix, only the master, 
so I have no idea what the effects are. (It has no effect/use on windows 
IIUC.)

Can you try to change it and restart? (OTOH, wasn't that setting moved 
to the master in 0.7.10?)

I'm sort of grasping at straws here, but there is obviously something 
wrong, we just need to find it. ;)
