That's just what we were doing. Once we realised what the problem we experimented a little and as soon as you logoff or close the ssh session the BuildBot is likely to start failing. ssh without an interactive logon (e.g. "ssh user at machine buildbot start xxx") had the same issues.
We now login and start or stop BuildBot using launchctl.
You'll have to setup your environment again in the plist, but other than it's fairly painless. The example linked from ticket 222 is pretty good.
