It is described here:

that you can rename the supplied Makefile.sample to Makefile.buildbot
and configure it to your liking (including setting environment
variables). Then simply do buildbot start BASEDIR like normal, and
buildbot will execute the Makefile for you.

I suggest that this trick should be mentioned in the Makefile.sample
file generated -- I was surpriced when I found out about this feature.
It was a pleasant surprize, but still... :-)
