I'm not sure what Makefile you are referring to here. FWIW, I have similar
errors as mentioned in the OP for other python packages, too, and I'm running
FC5. So it may well be a bug related to FC5.

While this may be a good way to debug the issue (assuming that rpmbuild
runs successfully on FC5 with your spec file), I don't think adding a
separate packaging procedure is a viable alternative to the built-in
bdist_rpm command that is available to all distutils-based build systems.
