this works a treat.
For future reference, the procedure is:

$ mkdir slave
$ cd slave
$ mktap buildbot slave --basedir /export/home/buildbot/slave6 --master \
   192.168.0.1:8007 --name xxxxxx --passwd xxxxxxx --usepty 0
$ buildbot start .
