 `--branch` seems to be included in 1.6.5 by looking at the specific commit
 [https://github.com/git/git/commit/7a4ee28f41270bf032d0dd0bfb17f601b9b3971a
 here], so that should be the first version supporting it.

 Regarding the approach, which ever is simpler to implement I guess, but
 since the version is checked as a first step, it would just be a matter of
 keeping that information and parsing it.
