 I'll stick with bundling if everyone's happy with it and note the
 downloader in my "would like to have" list. (It's a complication I don't
 need right now, but it would be cool later on.)

 You're right that Fossil support is offtopic in this bug. Let's continue
 that discussion in  [http://buildbot.net/trac/ticket/1034 bug 1034, "REQ:
 Fossil support"].

 No problem. Actually you can do that now. First you clone the fossil, then
 you open it, then you can have buildbot issue regular "fossil update"
 commands (that's what I do in my build steps). I'll set user "nobody" to
 have "clone" permission so you don't have to supply a username and
 password.
