 Thanks - that's exactly what I was looking for.  Let's remove the cruft
 while we're at it.

 The new stuff should have tests, too -- and tests that don't depend on an
 actual CVS installation.  I've done a bit of work to that end with the
 slave-side source tests, if you want to have a look.
