That's basically what we do on the Network UPS Tools lists, and if
someone is a regular poster but still won't subscribe, there's always
the "add to whitelist" checkbox as well.

I realize it's an extra burden on the list moderator, but we
distribute the load over several moderators, and it's not that bad. It
makes it a lot easier to catch up after being away for a few days.

The auto-expiry thing sounds cool, though - I'll have to look into
that next time we get a big wave of spam on the NUT lists.
